I began my journey through osteoporosis two years ago entering menopause. I met with my doctors discussing my treatment as my bone density test came back -1.0. I was told to take calcium. That was it nothing more, nothing less. I have to admit, I did not take it regularly as I felt great.
Two years later..... I went for my second bone density test and it jumped up to -2.5 and from being in osteopenia, now I am in full osteoporosis! How did I get here!!! I am scared! I am too young to have fractures! I am too young to stop living my life!!!
I am beginning my journey....first things first....I thought I had been eating healthy. After a little research, I found out that everything I was eating was inhibiting calcium from being absorbed into my body...I am releasing more and more calcium than I am getting. No one from my team of doctor's told me about diet or foods that will counter-act my attempt to increase calcium absorption.
I am a compulsive eater!!! I love to eat cookies and cake! I cannot eat them anymore and the fear of my life on hold is allowing me to stop the insanity of eating them. For two days I have been so good. I have printed a list of foods that don't interact with calcium....my favorites that I cannot eat right now is Spinach, Whole Wheat, Pasta, Tomato Sauce my top favorites oh and processed food like cake and cookies.
I am trying to build bone and am a young 54 year old woman, active. I did the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer last year....walked 47 miles.....I am not done yet and will not allow osteoporosis to dictate my life. So my food...Yesterday I ate cabbage and eggs with two slices of sprout bread (no wheat). Dinner I had a fruit salad and two slices of sprout bread with low fat cream cheese. I did not eat lunch, was not feeling well. Today I had an cheese omelet with low fat Jarlsberg and 2oz of sardines (they are full of calcium in the bones) with a sprout english muffin and 1/4 avocado. For lunch I am going to have cabbage with feta cheese and maybe a slice of sprout bread....I have not decided on that yet.
Other things I noticed -- my tummy is flatter and my waist is tighter. Being in menopause this is delightful! But I am just beginning my journey.
I am going to meet with my doctor in two weeks and will find a person to help me with my food. I need help!!!
I hope that anyone who is on the journey that I am on can share what is working for them. I am going to have a bone density test done as often as I can to monitor closely my bone loss.
Till next time....marie
